Day 9 Koufonissi to Amorgos

September 7, 2023

After breakfast, it was time to pack. We hung out in the hotel garden area until Aris drove us to the port. Our ferry was late so we drank wine at the port restaurant until it arrived and took a few more pictures of the azure blue water of the main beach. I finally saw a police officer at the port. His mode of transportation was a bicycle, not electric, but with official markings. Peddle power baby!

We have never been to a more laid back island, it was exactly what we wanted to experience and we sure weren’t disappointed! Just heavenly. The family who owns Anna Villas could not have been nicer. Son, mother, father, brother and then grandfather living in the house next door.

Finding accommodation like this and planning the whole itinerary, including ferry passes which saved us €100 each, was Jill’s tireless work over the past year. Anna Villas and Syros accommodation was booked a year ago as they were both very sought after. Jill is a star.

Speaking of stars, even Tom Hanks and Woody Harrelson have spent time on Koufonissi.

It was a quick forty minute ride to Amorgos. We arrived at our hotel after a 40 minute harrowing van ride on the hairpin road up to the clouds then down. The driver shifted gears like a pro, passing slow cars and scooters at every opportunity. The views of the barren mountains and the sea below were spectacular. I was in the front seat and didn’t mind his driving, I just decided to put my faith in his skills.

Our hotel is steps from the port, from which we will leave in three days. Jill had requested a top floor room, sixty four stairs and heavy luggage, not a good combo. The studio room was beautiful with a balcony overlooking the beach. We settled in and explored the port and the restaurant menus. Lots of pictures of the town from the dock. We picked a seafood restaurant. It was six o’clock. Wine, a whole grilled sea bream, and a green salad cost us a mere €23/$35CDN. By eight, the restaurant was packed with people enjoying the large portions.

I had to stop at the bakery to buy baklava to enjoy with Greek Metaxa brandy while writing my blog. The next several days will be sunny and not as hot, with temperatures in the low to mid twenties.

Our taxi driver was a Greek woman with a strong Aussie accent. She had moved to Australia with her parents in the sixties. She asked me what...
