Herceg Novi, Montenegro, Day 12

Day 12, May 23, 2014

Today was our last full day in Herceg Novi.  We strolled the promenade to check out the beaches and decide where we should go for a swim after lunch. We decided on the one with padded lounge chairs on a concrete platform with ladder access to the water.

Lunch was on the pier of the Herceg Novi Marina.

A nice yacht was parked close by and was being shined up for the arrival of four passengers.

From the restaurant we could see the former Mandic house behind the Rudnik Hotel which was badly damaged by the earthquake of 1979 and is still awaiting demolition.

I ordered a Slana Sardela, a salted anchovy with the skin on served on a small piece of toast with olive oil and garlic.  Every small bite was a flavour explosion. At 1 Euro, I could have had many more but I just savored every bite. I ordered grilled octopus, the last tick on my culinary list.  It was tender and delicious and served with yet again, boiled potatoes mixed with spinach and olive oil.

We spent time on the pier to take in the last views of Boka Kotorska.

It was a melancholy feeling remembering what we accomplished in such an idyllic part of the world and where, for my father, it all began.

We made our way to the swimming platform through the old railway tunnel.

It cost 5 euros for the two of us to use the loungers and we could even order a beer, which of course we did.

The water was cold but refreshing.  We swam and laid around until 4 then headed home. What a fabulous time we had.
