Sifnos, Greece, Day 4

Sifnos, Greece, Day 4

The wind down on Sifnos has begun with the bus schedule becoming more limited. We could not make our way to Kastro, the top of the island, on a direct route so we decided to have a relax day. We did some exploring of the extremities of town, it was ruggedly beautiful. We found the sewage treatment plant at the entrance of the bay then headed up a few streets above the town. I had not seen a white Bougainvillea until now and then a rare orange one.

Jill made a lovely breakfast of soft scrambled eggs with melted Emmental cheese. I continued reading my Willie Nelson book on the balcony while Jill did some work stuff. Sadly, an elderly man had a heart attack on the beach well within our view. He did not make it despite the efforts of a nurse, a doctor and our neighbour, a UK firefighter. It put a damper on the day. Reality bites.

We got some take away pork on a stick and made a cucumber and tomato salad with oil and vinegar for lunch on our balcony, a glorious place to relax with the breeze. A short siesta and then a long swim. Jill upped the ante to 200 strokes.

More relax time then off to dinner at the Cameron, a restaurant minutes from our hotel  recommended by our neighbours from the UK who have been back here in the same room for 18 years . The same three weeks each September. We had arugula salad with prosciutto, shaved Parmesan and sun dried tomatoes to share. Salads here are huge and always to share and we both had the Hofman schnitzel, pork with ham and cheese, baked. Delish!  As we were leaving we mentioned to the owner that Ian and Jenny recommended us and she insisted we sit back down for a home made liqueur. It was divine. Jill was telling her how much we loved Sifnos and said she saw us in the morning taking pictures and she said to herself, these people really love Sifnos. Small world, especially in Sifnos.

We could not pass the bakery that had Baklava without getting one more, but this time a large one as Jill wanted a bite. Then it was on to our favourite balcony for espresso, Metaxa, and Baklava, where I write my blog. Tomorrow we leave on the ferry back to Milos for a night before we fly to Athens and then on to Chania, Crete and beautiful Paleochora.

Day 10, September 22, 2024, Going Home

Our taxi driver was a Greek woman with a strong Aussie accent. She had moved to Australia with her parents in the sixties. She asked me what...
