Paleochora, Crete, Greece, Day 3

I woke up early in the hopes that the fish shop was open before breakfast and it was. I bought an ample size dorada, gilt head bream, for 6 Euros ( 9 CDN). The shop owner was happy to clean it for me and I was happy as Larry.

After a great Blue Horizon breakfast on the roof terrace, we headed out on a hike to Gialiskari beach, which is one side rough sand and the other round stone. The road was a mixture of paved and then unpaved as it followed the coast. The scenery was nothing short of spectacular as my pictures will show. We got there slowly as I constantly stopped to take one picture after another, 85 in total. I love rocks and the history they impart. Obviously, the round rocks that are mixed into the boulders that fell to the sea came from an era when they were formed millions of years ago, probably during an ice age and are only now slowly making their way to the receding ocean. We stopped at the rock beach and shared a beer then walked to the sandy beach for a recommended avocado salad. It was an overcast day, perfect for hiking. We decided not to swim and hiked back to Paleochora. With a steady pace, it only took an hour. After cooling off we went for a swim at our rock beach.

One of the things we love about the Greek Islands is that tourist destinations do not jack up prices simply because you have no other options. Here we were at a small cantina on Gialiskari  beach and prices were the same and in some cases, a little lower than in town.

Before cooking our fish, we went onto the roof terrace to watch the sun go down and had a nice chat with a young couple who live in Amsterdam, one from Kazakhstan and the other from the US. The sunset was spectacular as always from such a nice viewpoint.
