Sydney, Australia, 2019 Day 3

We both managed to get a good sleep, but were up early. I managed to complete my blog and pictures with a hand off to Jill, my editor and technical assistant. The weather was cool and cloudy, unusual for January, with chances for showers. We headed out by 9:15 to find Harris Farms, a store that promotes local produce which was minutes from our location. They have a fresh fish section unlike anything we have in Ontario. The prices though are not for the budget minded. Flathead, a local fish we love, yields two fillets and costs $59.99/kg. The produce was nothing like we see in Fergus, not cheap but outstanding.

We had a plan to walk to the Sydney Fish Market for lunch. The sky was giving us a light sprinkle of rain, which felt so good after our day of 107 degree heat. The drizzle got stronger as we made our way down William Street through Hyde Park, past the war memorial and into the heart of the city to Darling Harbour, which is experiencing redevelopment of extraordinary proportions. I wanted to see Barangaroo, once a wasteland and now transformed into a spectacular 22 hectare park with ongoing building south of the park. Sydney is lucky to have an abundance of sandstone that is used to this day to beautify the city and was widely used to create a stunningly beautiful park for all to enjoy.

Once we got to the end of the never ending park, we could see the Sydney Harbour Bridge through the mist. We walked back to Darling Harbour, across the bridge and made our way to the Sydney Fish Market, an iconic location for fish and shell fish. Many prices were wallet numbing. The throngs of people eating and buying was staggering. Flathead was nowhere to be found so we bought six cooked extra large Australian prawns which costs $36.99/kg for $9.40 for the six. A delicious pre-dinner treat.

Our bodies were feeling the result of six hours of walking so we made our way to the Town Hall train station and caught the train back to Kings Cross. We stopped at Harris Farms and got a few pieces of flathead, $20 and a few extra ingredients to round out our meal.

The prawns were delicious as we rested our weary bodies before preparing our dinner of panko breaded flathead.

  2. I love Barangaroo. Beautiful photos bringing back happy memories. That is one huge crab. I can't believe the fish is so expensive.
