Day 5 Syros

September 3, 2023

We knew it was Sunday because the church bells were ringing. We decided to explore the east side of Hermoupoli where the prominent people of the island lived. The architecture in the Vaporia Quarter is beautiful, marble stone streets and alleys and lots of stairs. We started by walking around the harbour admiring the view of Hermoupoli from the break wall. The views were stunning. The bougainvillaea we see throughout Greece are not native, but are from Brazil. The size of their gnarly trucks tells me they were planted a long time ago and they are all  planted against walls because they do not like wind. I mentioned in a previous post that there was very little crime except for graffiti (which we have seen in all of the places we have visited in Europe). Such a shame to see beautiful walls covered by these vandals.

We settled for lunch by the water at a typical Greek restaurant where we went in to the kitchen to see what they had cooked today. One of the many street cats enjoyed sharing my veal stew. We trekked home for a cooling off period in the aircon and then headed out to the Archeological Museum at the back of the municipal building where the wedding was held. We are always fascinated to see what has been recovered from the early settlements dating a few thousand years BC.

Tonight we are taking an even larger ferry to Paros, a one hour ride. The Blue Star 1 holds 1,890 passengers and 780 vehicles. Winds are strong so it will be a rough ride.
