We checked out at 10 and headed to the bus depot in Nazare. We were heading to Gaia, which is across the Douro River from Porto. It is where the wine grown in the Douro Valley and shipped by boat, is converted into Port and stored in large warehouses. It is home to forty merchant companies.
We arrived to the Campanha bus terminal in Porto at 2:30. We ordered an Uber and it was there in one minute. This ten minute trip cost us under 5€, cheaper than the Metro.
Our modern apartment is a short walk to the famous Dom Luis I Bridge, the main bridge to Porto. We stowed our stuff in record time and headed out to lunch. We were very hungry. At the end of our street was a modern restaurant specializing in beers from around the world. Although the menu had a very interesting selection, including tapas type fare, we opted for a burger which came with fries and draught beer. The thick burgers came with bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and special sauce and great fries. Neither of us could finish. Of course, we took what was left with us for a later snack. The burgers were so juicy as they were cooked to medium. Probably the best burger I’ve ever eaten. After a stop at a small grocery store, we headed back to our comfortable apartment to relax and plan our adventures for tomorrow.
Here are a couple of things of interest:
We noticed that cars were zipping by us but never saw any police. The speed limit is 120 and gas cost 1.67€/litre. Our favourite pastry is pastel de nata. Their size can vary slightly but they are all delicious. Some have a runny custard centre while others are firm. The phyllo cup is generally the same in texture. The price however, depending on where they are purchased, can vary from .51€ to 2.50€. By now you must realize we are frugal.
Your balcony at the new apt. looks nice. How is the view?
