Our adventure started at noon on Sunday when were picked up by Red Car for our ride to the airport. We celebrated while we killed time at the airport with two glasses of wine. Airport prices are ridiculous. $60 for two glasses of wine is insane but we were celebrating our upcoming 51st anniversary.
We flew with TAP Airlines. The plane had lots of leg room and the food service was good. We landed in Lisbon and then connected to Porto. From the Porto airport we took light rail to Porto, a half hour trip. We humped our carry on luggage to the Airbnb where our host was waiting. The apartment was beautiful. The building was owned by his grandparents and was completely renovated. In the apartment was a delicious cake his wife had baked for us along with a bottle of champagne, fresh bread, a huge round of Queijo de Sherpa cured semi-soft sheep cheese.
We spent the morning wondering around the streets in our area. Some of the architecture was absolutely stunning. We headed to a recommended Portuguese restaurant for lunch where we shared a grilled Dourada and a local beer called Super Bock. With a massive bowl of fries, boiled potatoes and sautéed veg, the bill came to 20 Euros.
We headed to the Bolhao Market. The assortment of fresh vegetables and fruits was impressive as were the meats and fish. You could get a glass of wine, in a glass, and were allowed to walk around with it while enjoying freshly cooked seafood, oysters, shrimp, sea urchins, amongst the many offerings. Sardines in a tin are available from many vendors. They are considered a cultural delicacy available in beautiful colourfully decorated tins.
By this time, we were exhausted and were fighting not falling asleep when we got back to our place. it was an early night.
Your AirBnB looks beautiful! Enjoy!
