Day 9, Nazare, Portugal May 14,2024

Our last full day in Nazare. The market opened today and we wanted to get a fresh fish to cook in our apartment. We got there early and bought a one kg pargo, a type of sea bream. We also picked up a wrinkled tomato, a cucumber and broccolini for dinner.

We heard the waves would be larger today so we took the funicular up to Sitio. It was bitterly cold and very windy this morning, so I had to trade my shorts and thongs in for long pants and shoes. The funicular runs often and we got there minutes before it’s assent. We hoofed it to Praia do Norte. The waves were not huge, but certainly larger than yesterday. Without going down to the beach, it was difficult to tell how big they were but when we looked at how small the people looked walking on the beach, they were impressive. At the end of the road, there was an old fort, the prime viewing point when the monster waves develop and surfers end up being towed out. Nazare is the home of Garrett McNamara, the American pro big wave surfer best known for setting the world record for the largest wave ever surfed, as documented in HBO series ‘100 Foot Wave’.

Rather than having lunch in Sitio, we decided to head back and have a late lunch/early dinner at our place. We opened a bottle of Rose wine and sat on the small balcony while I started writing my blog. It was heavenly. What a lovely way to spend the afternoon.
