Today was going to be a beautiful day with a high of 25. We headed down to Ribeira, the Porto side of the Douro River, lots of down, then up, then down again on what seemed like hundreds of steps. It was a beehive of activity. Lots of people at the market which had a cornucopia of products made from cork. It was a bit of a tourist trap. We had an unsuccessful lunch, no more about that. We carried on along the river until we could no longer continue. Google said it was 40 minutes to home. It was mostly all up and mostly stairs then uphill.
Our favourite pastry in Portugal is the world famous Pastel de nata, a custard filled filo pastry tart. We had seen it at the market for 2.30 Euros and a little less elsewhere. We have resisted having one up to now for some reason. Probably because they are like potato chips, hard to have just one. By the way, great with an espresso. We stopped to buy salmon to cook for dinner, a mixed salad, more of those beautiful tomatoes and inexpensive white wine. Jill found pastel de nata at the grocery store bakery for .35 euros, what a bargain! We bought two, just two! It’s what you call self control. We dragged ourselves back home. We were exhausted.
