Day 14
We were up early to pack, a nice breakfast and we were off to the bus station. But first I had to ditch the excess stones we collected. I would have loved to bring them home with me but weight was a factor. I found a beautiful old tree on the beach. As I emptied my bag, beauty poured out as it graced the base of the tree. It was a beautiful assortment, methodically picked, and cherished. Now for someone else like me to enjoy, if nothing else but wonder how they ended up at the base of the tree. As I folded up my bag, a beautiful stone dropped to the ground. I slipped it into my pocket.
We said our goodbyes to Kiki and Maria and left them with a gift of our dot art stones which they had admired. They were delighted and gave us a gift of Cretan extra virgin olive oil. Beautiful people in every way and wonderful hosts. We turned down a ride, then rolled our bags through town to the bus depot. The coach that arrived was big and looked brand new. We sat up front. Through the mountains the driver took curves at 35-45 km and never went over 50 km. We left at 11 and arrived in Chania at 12:55 and then caught the 1:30 bus to Rethymno. Along the way, we saw how the seas were whipped up by the winds. Waves were pounding all of the beaches, apparently all of the North shore was being pounded.
Our host picked us up at the bus depot in Rethymno and gave a a running commentary of what we were passing as we got to our Airbnb, a ten minute ride. He was awesome and our space with a large balcony is where we can spread out compared to a studio. A large well stocked kitchen felt like home. After popping out to the grocery store for a few essentials and fresh produce, we decided to eat in. It was now three and we hadn’t eaten since breakfast. The butcher shop doors away had yellow chicken and that called for a home cooked meal. Even the fat was yellow. We don’t see this quality back home in our town so I couldn’t pass it up. I have only seen yellow chicken in Spain and now Greece.
After dinner we went for a walk along the beach boardwalk which took us to the old town. It was lined with restaurant after restaurant, all with views of the ragging waves, and it was windy. We took a side street into the old town and walked back to our place.
Great harbour shot!
ReplyDeletePam and I have been enjoying your blog. We sit together at the computer and read it together. Each time we get to the pictures we sigh and then say, "Wish we were with them".
ReplyDeleteWe think of you both very often in this fabulous country.
DeleteBeautiful! The harbour photos look very much like Chania.
