Day 15, Rethymno, Crete, Greece

Day 15

We got up early and went for a long walk to check out the beach. Water was still very rough but the wind had died down somewhat.  I picked up a few black figs to tide me over until lunch which we decided to have out. Our host left us lots of fresh fruit that Jill cut up. We have more than enough for the week. We each had a bowl. Pears, apples, and grapes, so ripe and tasty.

Before we headed into old town, we stopped by the fish market and bought a 480 gram Dorada for dinner. I was surprised that the price per kilo was two thirds less than Paleochora. We may be eating a lot of fish this week. Old town started off quiet as it was Sunday and not all stores were open. Those that were, were offering end of season discounts of 30%. Lots of bargains to be had. We stopped for lunch at a small hole in the wall restaurant. It was good and reasonably priced compared to the seaside restaurants which are more than twice the price. We walked through the maze of streets and alleys in old town which was now bustling. We made our way home while wishing we were game enough to rent a pair of the Lime Scooters, available everywhere. People were scooting along, no pun intended, like a house on fire but I think perhaps missing the scenery.

Dinner on the balcony was a delight. The dorada, a guilt head bream, was delicious. Jill proclaimed it the best so far. I agreed. Moist and delicious with the extra virgin olive oil our host gave us from his own olive grove, it was outstanding. I also made a Greek salad and to finish off, we each had an espresso and Metaxa. Another wonderful day.
