Day 2, Paleochora, Crete, Greece

Day 2

I hiked to the fish market and bought a 750 gram bream for dinner.  After a nourishing breakfast on the roof terrace of our hotel, which is included, we headed to the stone beach for a long swim. On our way back to our room we checked out the restaurants and picked the one where we had lunch.  I had octopus with a salad.  It was delicious.  Jill had a huge salad that I had to help her finish.  The salads in Greece are big enough for at least two people.  This one had tons of tomatoes so red and incredibly tasty.  Then off to the sandy beach for a swim and a walk. I said to Jill that we will walk until we see an old naked person, then we’ll turn around and walk back. The end of the beach is where the nudists hang out, pun intended.

Our small kitchen comes with a two burner hot plate so cooking a fresh fish required some inventive maneuvers.  I double wrapped the fish in tin foil and pushed it down into the frying pan we brought along with us.  A plate acted as a lid.  Ten minutes a side and we were set.  We bought some tasty Cretan olive oil in Chania which we drizzled on the fish.  Flaked sea salt and lemon finished it off.  Yum.  After double espressos we headed out to find Alaloom, the bar my sister raved about.  She went there with her husband almost every night when she was here in the Spring.  She insisted we go there and have the drink Alexandre made for her, gin, elderberry, muddled cucumber and magic.  As we sat down, we met Alexandre and Jorge.  Jorge said that he thinks about my sister everyday and both were giddy happy to meet us.  Allankah must have made quite the impression on them.

The restaurants in town were packed with people.  Almost every seat outside was taken with people enjoying their al fresco meals, drinks and conversations. It was a beautiful sight. The short walk home was equally entertaining.

Apparently we need a few more lessons on how to take selfies ... or maybe I have a tentacle stuck in my throat :)

  2. At Alaloom we always started off with Ouzo, then I changed to the cucumber gin drink. Love those guys. Doug bought a great black t-shirt with writing in white just down the street from this restaurant: OUZO Connecting People Paleochora.

Day 10, September 22, 2024, Going Home

Our taxi driver was a Greek woman with a strong Aussie accent. She had moved to Australia with her parents in the sixties. She asked me what...
