Day 4, Paleochora, Crete, Greece

Day 4

Another day with no plans. Last night we found a small butcher shop in town and went back twice today. Once to by schnitzel for dinner tonight and then again to buy beef and pork locally made sausages for lunch. We were set after a stop at a small vegetable/fruit grocer for a cucumber and large tomato for an olive oil and vinegar salad. A swim and walk on the sandy beach was in order. Our room was being cleaned so we went up to the deserted rooftop terrace with a beer. We decided that we must get up there more often than just for breakfast and the occasional sunset. The views of the west side of the peninsula and the sandy beach are beautiful. Then lunch on our balcony, with a warm breeze, was tranquility at its best. No plans, no worries.

One of the many nice things about Paleochora is the night when many of the streets in the heart of the town are closed to vehicles. Chairs and tables spread out and the town comes alive and the beautiful church is lit up. The atmosphere is family friendly with everyone enjoying the ambiance. Some artisan shops only open in the evening when foot traffic is at its maximum. A very vibrant town.

Dinner worked out well. We fried it in extra virgin olive oil. I know, a bit of a waste of the good stuff but delicious. Once I flipped it, I added lots of the local cheese and put on a lid to help it melt. It turned out better than I had hoped. Accompanied with Franks hot sauce and the oil and vinegar cabbage salad which was softening all day, was a hit.

  1. Pam likes the photo of the stones. I asked her if there was one of Keith Richards.
