Day 4, September 16, 2024, Kalymnos Greece

After a 12 hour sleep we were ready to embrace the day. (Jill made me add that I slept for 12, she slept for 5 lol). Our cat greeted us as we opened the door and she shared my chair with me while I updated my travel blog. I could be a cat person with a cat like this. She tries to follow me into our place, but we shoo her out with her many attempts. She loves head scratches and rewards us by rubbing herself on our legs as we sit. What a darling cat. She is not the first animal that befriended us while on vacation. On one of our first trips to the Cook Islands the owner left us with beautiful Princess, a black lab cross. We fed her, as instructed and she slept inside our cottage by the front door. Darling girl. Then on another stay in the Cook Islands, Cherry, the three legged dog followed us everywhere and hung with us until she went home at night across the road. When we walked the beach, she got tired and found it easier to swim along the shallow shore to keep up with us. We would have loved to take Cherry home with us.

We awoke to a beautiful sunny calm day perfect for the short 1 km ferry ride to Telendos. It was once part of Kalymnos until a massive earthquake in 535A.D. separated it from the rest of the island. It is a barren island with no roads and just 50 inhabitants. After Jill made us a delicious breakfast with olive oil fried bread (no toaster) and eggs, we headed up and down the narrow roads to the ferry port. It cost €3 per person each way.

We caught the ferry just as it was about to leave. The water was calm so it was a pleasant ride. We walked from the port to each end, but first stopped in one of the many restaurants and bars which lined the shore for a Mythos beer to share. The water was beautifully clear and the view of the mainland was picture perfect. We visited the Christian settlement which was on Telendos before the earthquake. Not much was left. It was past noon but we weren’t hungry as we don’t normally have breakfast.

We caught the ferry back and decided to cook at our place a late afternoon meal of spaghetti with tomatoes we bought yesterday. Actually, we didn’t buy them, the lovely shopkeeper of the mini market 2 minutes from our place gave them to us free, along with 2 small loaves of day old bread, what a kind man. We scoured the market for what we could add to tomato spaghetti and found sausages. Just as we got back it started to rain and our cat was happy to see us as she slept on my chair.

Late lunch turned out to be delicious. We had just one hot plate, but like I say, it’s better than camping. Eating on our sheltered patio with a cool breeze, a great view and a bottle of wine, a true delight. We then headed down to our beach for a swim and more rock collecting. At this time of year the water is the warmest. Beautiful crystal clear water can’t be beat and because it’s salt water, you can float.

  1. Your spaghetti looks great! Perhaps you can smuggle the cat back to Elora. Molly might like a friend.

Our taxi driver was a Greek woman with a strong Aussie accent. She had moved to Australia with her parents in the sixties. She asked me what...
