A Day in Ios – Sunshine, Beaches, and a Few Surprises
Ios, Greece – what a day! The sun was shining, the sky was clear, and we set off ready to enjoy another little adventure on this beautiful island.
We hopped on the bus down to Mylopotas Beach, one of the most famous beaches on Ios. The ride itself is always a little fun—packed with tourists, beach bags, and plenty of chatter. Once we arrived, we decided to walk all the way down to the end of the beach where the famous Drakos Fish Taverna sits.
Curious about the menu, we checked it out… only to discover they were charging 65 euros for a plate of orzo with just 3 shrimp and 3 mussels. Honestly, no thank you—tell them they’re dreaming!
So instead, we wandered back and landed at Saltz Restaurant, where the deal was much better: free sunbeds if you bought a drink. Perfect. We ordered two cold beers and two chicken wraps, which turned out to be absolutely delicious. With our bellies full, we spent the afternoon swimming in the incredible turquoise sea and soaking up the Greek sunshine on our loungers.
By late afternoon, we caught the bus back to our lovely accommodation. A dip in the pool and another stretch of sunbathing later, we settled in with a glass of wine and a game of Scrabble. Jill was the champion of the day—yes, she won!
As evening rolled around, we jumped back on the bus into Chora in search of dinner. Eventually, we found a restaurant called Sis Greece. Big mistake. We were talked into ordering the Pork Kleftiko, priced at 35 euros, and it turned out to be the worst meal we’ve had in Greece in 40 years. Dry, flavorless, and completely disappointing. To make matters worse, the owner insisted the wine was made by his father. Not true—it was dreadful, and at 10 euros for half a litre, ridiculously overpriced.
Peter spoke up, and we managed to get 5 euros knocked off the bill. Still, paying 40 euros for that experience left us shaking our heads.
Back at our accommodation, we made ourselves a good strong coffee, poured a glass of smooth Metaxa, and laughed it off. In the end, all was well—the beach, the sun, the swim, and the company made it a day to remember (with a story to tell for years to come).
