Last night when writing my blog, I fell asleep every time I closed my eyes. It was the same for Jill when she was proofreading it. So it was off to bed at 9 for a wonderful 12 hour sleep. Jill was up a little earlier and took some dark cloud pictures off the balcony.
We started our day by going to Mercadona to stock up on staples, like extra virgin Spanish olive oil, cold cuts, buns, Iberico ham and cheese, wine, water and beer. And also half a kg of large cooked shrimp with shell and heads on. They were a bargain @ €8.5/kg. As in all of Europe, I love that everything is priced by the kilogram, unlike Canada, a pet peeve of mine, advertised by the pound but priced by the kilogram on the product sticker and at the register. Once we stocked the fridge, we took our accommodation’s private elevator down to the beach boardwalk where we walked for 4 km west, then back.
The boardwalk was busy and it was still cloudy, so not hot. Torremolinos has changed so much in the fifty years since we were here last, and where our first son Jordan was conceived. Yep, born nine months later. We took the elevator back up and found a place for cod fish and chips. When they came to the table, he called it bacalao. We both looked at each other and wondered if it was reconstituted salt cod and it was! The cod pieces with skin on were breaded with ground chickpeas. Delicious! We were surprised at how flaky and moist the cod was. With 2 large draught beers, €31.5 and sitting outside in comfort, people watching, a bargain at a very nice restaurant.
We met a Spanish couple with a beautiful friendly, young, small, black and white Brittany Spaniel. She looked so much like a miniature Eddie. When she looked at me with Eddie’s look, my heart melted. Her name was Laya, and she walked obediently off leash and only 7 months old, remarkably well trained. We took pictures.
We then took the elevator down to the promenade and walked east from our place. It was now 4 and we were ready to chill at our apartment. We calculated that all told, we walked about twelve kilometres today. It was Spanish rosé time. Another bargain at €2.5. Like I say, the more we drink, the more we save.
Tonight, we ate cold shrimp drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and lemon, and a mixed salad. Yum. Tomorrow we are taking the train to Malaga where we have arranged a guided tour of Alcazaba and the Roman Theatre.
The last picture shows our apartment, top floor far right.
