Chania to Paleochora

After a full buffet breakfast, which was included with our room for 60 Euros ($90 CDN), we walked down to the Venetian Harbour again where I had my other belt shortened. On the way we passed a fish market, the kind I would love to have in my town so that we could eat fish often. The produce looked great with some variegated tomatoes I had never seen before. Too bad we were not staying in Chania so that I could cook up some delicious meals for us.

The bus left promptly at 12:45pm after a somewhat chaotic boarding. The ride through the mountains was awesome as it hugged the side of the mountain through the gorges to the sea. By 2:45 we were wheeling our suitcases through the streets of beautiful Paleochora to the Blue Horizon, a small modern hotel where our studio with a small kitchenette awaited us. It has a nice size balcony at the back of the hotel - exactly what we wanted so we were shielded from the afternoon sun.

We walked to the eastern side of town which is located on a peninsula. Sandy beach on the west side, round rock beach on the east. We found the restaurant where we had a delicious avocado and arugula salad last year and we shared one again. It was as good as we remembered with an oil/mustard dressing, grated cheese on a bed of tomatoes. The schnitzel Jill ordered was enormous with more than half brought home for our midnight snack. And yes, I once again had calamari. I am starting to grow tentacles :-)

There is a grocery store a few doors down so we stocked up on olives, salami, cheese, beer, and prosecco, an ideal beverage for watching the sunset from the hotel’s roof terrace. Tonight it was Metaxa and espresso as the sun went down with a little bit of guitar playing to sweeten the mood. Thunderstorms are expected as we turned in for the night.
