Paleochora, Crete, Greece, Day 4

We awoke to a beautiful clear sky which meant just one thing, beach day. We haven't had a full beach day since we arrived in Greece but today was it. We have slowly darkened up with no burns so it was time. Have I mentioned that the waters in Greece are the clearest, cleanest, than anywhere we have have traveled. Once we claimed our sun beds, we walked the beach before a swim. While Jill read her book, I bought some sausages and made a salad for lunch. We arranged to meet back at our room in 35 minutes when lunch would be ready. Eating out on our balcony was too hot so we moved inside then it was back to the beach for another walk and swim.

Before dinner, we went for a walk to Pearl Cavo which is the start of the long stone beach 10 minutes from Paleochora. Some of the chickens we passed the day before were now comfortably roosting in an olive tree.

The fish I bought for dinner was larger than the day before. I think it was about 900 grams, a 7 Euro bargain. We don't have an oven so I seasoned and oiled it, wrapped it in tin foil and cooked it in a large fry pan which we bought for 13 Euros. A plate worked as a lid. Like last night’s fish, it cooked perfectly, a minute more at 7 minutes a side. Drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with salt and a squeeze of lemon, heaven on a plate. With garlic broccoli, we were so happy. We call it hotel camping, using what we have to make the best of it. And it was a fraction of the cost of eating out and happy to be on our balcony with our tunes playing. We both get weary of eating out especially when we can do it better ourselves. The fish we had for dinner would have cost us easily 40 Euros plus plus. It was delicious.

We finished eating and rushed up to the roof terrace to catch the sunset. I brought up espressos and Metaxa and my guitar. We had a lovely conversation with Maria, the daughter of the owners. Her bother is going into the army in two days for 9 months, obligatory, for commando training and she is going to Barcelona to get her masters in Hotel Management. A lovely family.
