Day 1, Chania to Paleochora, Crete, Greece

Day 1, Chania to Paleochora, Crete

We flew with Air Transat direct to Athens and after a 5 hour wait, we flew with Aegean Airlines to Chania airport, then a 25 minute bus ride into Chania. A highlight of the 45 minute flight was flying over Milos which we visited last year. It was now 3 pm and we had to stay up as as long as possible in order to re-adjust our body clock after 30 hours with very little sleep. One of the reasons for the lack of sleep was the tall male fight attendant, who would walked with speed up and down the aisle, constantly brushed hard on my shoulder and woke me whenever I fell asleep. My arm was on the inside of my armrest, but he still managed to hit me every time. The aisles and seats were extremely narrow.

After some shopping on leather street, we stopped for dinner at a restaurant on the Venetian harbour, a beautiful spot to relax and enjoy Greek hospitality, which usually comes with a small complimentary bottle of raki at the end of your meal.

We stayed at a hotel by the bus terminal in Chania so that we could catch the 12:45 bus to Paleochora. After a hardy breakfast at the hotel which was included in the rate, we took the 2 hour bus ride through the mountains from the north of Crete to the south west tip. We were warmly greeted by Maria, the owner’s daughter of the small but modern 9 room Blue Horizon hotel across from the sandy beach. We have stayed here twice before so it was like coming home. We opted for an early dinner and walked through town to the Odyssey pizza restaurant, a favourite, for an huge avocado salad for two and an 8 slice chorizo pizza. Dinner, with two large draughts, came to $30 CDN. A bargain when you consider we pay $20 for two craft beers at our local pub back home.

A walk along the sandy beach and watching the sunset from the rooftop terrace topped off our day.

  1. Except for the lack of sleep on the flight, it sounds like you are off to a great start! Enjoy!
